The principle

An artistic protocol

A date produces a cryptographic fingerprint; the fingerprint produces a form; the certificate attests the artwork.

The date

Birthday, public or private event, intimate day. The date is the protocol’s input material, determined by the collector and fixed in the register.

The transduction

An internal operation transforms the date into a unique fingerprint. This fingerprint determines the 64-dot grid: colour, rhythm, balance.

The artwork

The composition certified by the artist becomes an artwork. It is entered into the register and accompanied by a signed electronic certificate of authenticity.

At the visual scale, 64 dots with 7 possible states open 7^64 combinations — a number far greater than the estimated number of stars in the Milky Way.

Acquisition

Two print formats.

Each date can be attributed only once. The print is produced on Fine Art paper, with European shipping included and a signed electronic COA — Certificate of Authenticity.

Date Cipher is conceived as a wall piece: restrained, graphic and immediately legible in a contemporary interior.

The protocol remains invisible at first glance. What appears is a geometric artwork. The collector becomes the guardian of the date and its meaning.

Franck Gérard

Franck Gérard is a French visual artist. His work moves across photography, post-photography, abstraction and conceptual art.

A large part of his practice consists in transforming data, structures and systems into sensuous forms. Date Cipher extends this research through cryptographic transduction.
